Special Events and Trips
The Butterfield Park District offers a variety of Special Events and Trips throughout the year. Many are long-standing traditions that help build the community and provide family-friendly fun for people of all ages. Check out all we have to offer below. Some of these events require pre-registration.
New Fall Craft Fair
All Ages Sep 25 Sa 10:00am - 4:00pm Free
Grab the kids and some snacks and join the Butterfield Park District for an outdoor movie. What better way to enjoy a summer evening than to spread out a blanket and see a movie? Be prepared to laugh like a kid again! All participants need to be accompanied by an adult 18 and older. Movie will begin at dusk. Pre-registration is required. Masks must be worn by all participants. All Ages

Come join us for this New Family Friendly event at The Glen fireplace. Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket. Smore's will be roasted, and a story will be read. The story will begin promptly at 6:30, with smore roasting to follow. We will supply the smores ingredients and roasting tools. Please dress for the weather. In the event the weather is inclement, the program will be cancelled. All participants need to be accompanied by an adult 18 and older. Pre-registration is required. Come join the Butterfield Park District and Oak Brook Terrace Park District for this New Teen Fireside Fun at The Glen fireplace. Located at 21W730 Butterfield Rd. Lombard. Bring a lawn chair, smore's will be roasted, music will be playing, and outdoor games will be played. We will supply the smores ingredients and roasting tools. Please dress for the weather. In the event the weather is inclement, the program will be cancelled. Pre-registration is required. Masks must be worn by all participants.

Tour the magnificent Rialto Square Theatre, often referred to as the 'Jewel of Joliet,’ and widely considered one of the 10 most beautiful theatres in the nation. The building reflects Greek, Roman and Byzantine architecture. While listening to a brief history of the theatre, you'll walk through the grand Esplanade and Rotunda to see the architecture and craftsmanship. Next is the stage and 'green room' where you will see 1000's of signatures from past artist.

Take a hands-on look at beautiful downtown Geneva and explore the historical architecture, unique stores, specialty food shops and so much more. We'll spend sometime at the Geneva Historical Museum before going on a guided Architectural Tour of several homes and buildings of the surrounding area. Lunch and shopping will conclude the day.

Cantigny is a 500-acre park in Wheaton, Illinois, 30 miles west of Chicago. It is the former estate of Joseph Medill and his grandson Colonel Robert R. McCormick, publishers of the Chicago Tribune. It is open to the public with interactive exhibits & displays presenting the military history of the First Infantry Division.

Come join us at the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. It has a collection of 30 master works of large-scale sculpture situated within 100 acres of prairie landscape. This museum-in-the-prairie is open for public viewing 365 days a year. There will be a short presentation on the history of the park before our guided tour. The walking tour will last approximately an hour and a half.

The Milwaukee Art Museum offers a rich variety of programs to those young and young at heart. Join us for an activity-filled day to meet world-renowned artists, engage in lively discussions, and maybe make your own masterpiece.

The Pride of Oregon is an authentic Paddle Wheel Riverboat, 102 fee of real river charm. She docks at the historic Maxson Riverside Restaurant and Paddle Wheel Inn. Built as a replica of the famous Rosie O'Shea paddle wheel in 1989, her festive exterior and graciously appointed interior provide a relaxing atmosphere for memory-making cruises.
We'll take a 2 hour 15 mile round-trip river cruise that takes passengers past Lowden State Park and under the watchful eye of Chief Blackhawk, the largest concrete monolith in the country.

When their legs get tired, they run with their hearts. Experience the racing excitement from the elevated platform of the Million Room Restaurant. With a lookout point to the track and access to the stadium, you can enjoy the afternoon in style.
This all-inclusive outing provides admission to Arlington International, an Arlington program, a seat on the Million Room Platform, and a 2 hour Chef's Table with a beverage of your choosing.

Family Fun Fest
Ahoy Mates! Come walk the plank with the Butterfield Crew and dive into a day filled with family fun! Your day will be jam packed with fun activities, live DJ, and chances to win awesome raffle prizes. Admission to the pool is also FREE during this event. You will need to pre-register for this event, no walk-ins will be allowed.
**Family Fun Fest is FREE Admission. Raffle Tickets are $1.00 a piece for purchase at the event. **

Enter the Netherworld of Naper Settlement to experience over 20 sinister attractions, spooky vendors, and spine-chilling performances during this annual celebration of the occult. Meet the lost souls of the dead in a haunted happening you won’t forget.
Oct 15 F 5:30 - 11:00pm $45
Join us for a trunk or treat! Local families and businesses are invited to reserve a parking space in which they may pull in a vehicle, decorate with Halloween décor, and give out candy to the trick or treaters as they stop by. This is a safe alternative to trick or treating around your neighborhood. This event will be supervised by Park District staff. Parents are welcome to travel from trunk to trunk with their children. Don't forget to dress up in your favorite costume and bring non-perishable foods for our Haunts Against Hunger Food Drive! All food collected will be distributed to local food pantries just in time for the cooler months and holiday season. All families, staff, and vendors will be required to wear a face mask. All vendors and staff will also be wearing gloves while passing out candy. We will be practicing social distancing. Please register your children only. We require each family to participate in decorating your car and to pass out pre-packaged candy.

POLAR EXPRESS STORYTIME TRAIN AM BREAKFAST OR PM LUNCH
Come take a ride on The Polar Express Storytime Train! We will board the train at the Downers Grove Main Street Station and head to the North Pole (Banquets at Two Brother's Roundhouse in Aurora). Upon arrival, Santa's Elves will welcome your family into Santa's Workshop where we will eat a breakfast or lunch buffet with Santa. During your stay at the North Pole, you will take a picture with Santa, decorate a delicious sugar cookie, play fun holiday games, and create a holiday craft! At the end of the day Santa will read one of his favorite stories to everyone. We will sing some familiar holiday songs on our train ride back and read a special story. Make this event part of your holiday tradition! Pre-registration is required. Tickets sell out quickly. Registration opens July 19. *This program is not included in reduced prices.

SANTA STORYTIME EXPRESS BUS AM OR PM
Travel to Santa's North Pole by bus this holiday season! Hop aboard our decorated state of the art express bus for a special story, and a fun sing along. We will travel to Santa's North Pole (Banquets at Two Brother's Roundhouse). Upon arrival you will be greeted by Santa's elves, enjoy a meal with Santa, play fun games, enjoy crafts, and decorate cookies. Pre-registration is required. Registration opens Monday July 19th.

North Pole VIP Excursion-AM Breakfast or PM Lunch
Join us on a magical journey to the North Pole! Families will receive VIP treatment, experience personal quality time from Santa including one on one visits, a special group story time, individual and group photos. Each child will get to keep a signed autographed copy of the book read by Santa and families will receive a special gift at the end of your visit.
The day will begin at the North Pole (Two Brother's Roundhouse in Aurora, IL), guest will arrive via their own transportation to a special location and be greeted by one of Santa's special Elf helpers! Everyone will be guided into the North Pole to VIP seating up close and personal with the big guy himself. After your 30-minute visit with Santa, brunch will be served followed by crafts, games, and cookie decorating.
Special invitations, VIP passes, full event itinerary and menu will be sent to families by December 1st.
